Timing Belt Tensioner MY12+

The belt tensioner is responsible for taking up any slack in the timing belt to maintain accurate cam timing.  This 13033AA050 timing belt tensioner is intended for use with Subaru timing belt part number 13028AA250 (13160AA120 in Japan) which is thicker than the previous generation belt 13208AA240 (13160AA110 in Japan).  When using an aftermarket belt, most are replacements for 13208AA240 and therefore we prefer to use tensioner 13033AA042.

A failed tensioner may leak oil or may make noise during engine operation.  A good tensioner will have a high amount of resistance when compressing the plunger and will maintain that resistance over the full range of travel.

When installing a new tensioner it is suggested that it be bled of any trapped air by compressing and releasing the plunger across the full range of travel.  This should be done with the tensioner in an upright position (best done with in a press) and should be compressed and released very slowly without building any significant force on the plunger.
